With a fellow teacher and the children in my small home-based learning group in Yogyakarta—a cozy and meaningful time of learning together.
My name is Brigita Huri Utami, but most people call me Gita. I was born in Kendal, Central Java, and I’m 33 years old. I live in Yogyakarta with my lovely family – my husband, our daughter, and my mother-in-law.
I work as the principal at KB-TK Kalyca Montessori, a place that’s very close to my heart. My days are filled with learning and laughter alongside the children and teachers there. From Monday to Friday, I spend my mornings to late afternoons at school. Once I’m home, I continue supporting children in a small home learning group. In the evenings, I love spending quiet time with my family.
I believe that peace and justice begin at home. In our household, we try to listen to one another, show love, and give everyone the space to grow. At school, I bring these values into my work by teaching children about peace, tolerance, and fairness, using both the Montessori approach and Life Values Education (LVE) activities. I believe that when children grow up with these values, they will become compassionate and thoughtful leaders in their communities.
What gives my life the most meaning and hope is the presence of children. Watching them grow, learn, and smile reminds me why I do what I do. Every little step they take fills me with gratitude. My family is also my biggest support system—our simple daily life brings me so much peace and joy.
Being part of the Friends Peace Teams – Asia West Pacific feels natural to me because I truly believe that building peace starts with everyday actions. It’s not always about solving big conflicts – it’s about choosing kindness, being patient, and respecting others, whether at home, at school, or in the community.
I may not do grand things, but I believe that by listening with empathy, appreciating differences, and leading with love, I can help make a difference—one step at a time.
