Fauziah House after flash flood 26 November 2026, at Kampung Durian, Aceh Tamiang, 15 April 2026.
I got encouraging news: I hadn’t been in touch with my friends at AVP Indonesia for a long time, but when the flash floods hit Aceh Tamiang on November 26, 2025, my friends greeted me and asked how I was doing. While I was anxious because my house was buried in mud and I had to find safety by setting up a makeshift tent, I was able to share my story with gratitude.
From Aceh Tamiang, I’ve shared news and our progress several times after the flood. Twelve days after the flash flood, my family was able to clear a 3.5 m x 4 m motorcycle repair shop space to accommodate four adult women and two toddlers. The men, meanwhile, lived in a dusty, hot tent.
Despite these limitations, several humanitarian organizations, communities, and even individuals have come forward to support us. In April 2026, approximately 145 families out of 500 whose homes were destroyed and buried by mud moved into temporary housing measuring 4.5 m x 4.5 m.
On April 18, 2026, I am grateful for the support of Friends Peace Teams Asia West Pacific Indonesia. I was able to distribute portable cupboards to 6 families, clean water containers to 12 families, containers for storing eating utensils to 12 families, and support to revive a family motorcycle repair shop that has been very helpful in cleaning flood-affected motorcycles in my village.
Moments like these remind me of my encounters with my FPT AWP friends when I trained with them on the meaning of living without violence. They taught me how to be resilient in the face of adversity and how to speak up for justice amidst disasters caused by human greed. I am deeply grateful that, despite these difficult and limited circumstances, I was still able to reach out to several individuals and humanitarian organizations to be present in my community and neighborhood. Thank you for everything. (By Fauziah – Fau Faedah, Aceh Tamiang, rewritten by Petrus)
