Read Aloud Books in Indonesian, Javanese and English
Friendly Book Collaborative is formatting and translating books for the Read Aloud Book Collection. Now we have 18 books in English, Indonesia, Javanese and Nepali that can be accessed and downloaded for free from the Resources on https://friendspeaceteams.org/peace-libraries.
Peace Libraries in Indonesia are printing the collection in English, Indonesia and Javanese to support the spirit of spreading the joy of reading aloud with Indonesian children. There are six libraries from Indonesia that will join this journey.
I began by printing one proof copy of each book before printing multiple copies. This was very important to make sure that the content, paper, binding, and format were suitable. We don’t want to regret it after printing the “wrong” copies. We found some errors in the way blank pages appeared in the book, incorrect information on the legal page, and so forth. So printing proof copies was well worth the expense.
We are now printing 10 copies of each Indonesian version, 8 copies of each English version and 7 copies of Javanese version in the A5 format for the children and six of the Indonesian books in the A3 format for teachers and librarians to use with larger groups.
Besides that, we were also pleased to print four other book titles. We printed three other books that are bilingual in Indonesian and English: “ABC Awal”. “ABC Senang” and “Two Chicken Friends.” These were written by local teachers for our children. The ABC books were illustrated by a local artist.
In addition, we printed the “Block Book, Inspired to Build”. This book was written by Nanik and Nadine to support parents and teachers to support children to play with unit blocks. We are printing 100 copies of this book and offering teacher training. Children who play with unit blocks have been shown to excel in higher order mathematics in high school and college levels. This type of play builds basic capacity which is an essential seed that leads to successful lives, peace, development, and prosperity.
