Friends Peace TeamsIt is a place where Quakers support one another’s long-term justice and peace ministries through global networks of justice and peace workers, supporters, and donors from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs, working in the African Great Lakes, Asia West Pacific, Europe, and the Americas.
Friends Peace Teams Asia West PacificWelcomes visitors as spiritual hospitality—allowing you to get to know one another and, in doing so, to get to know yourself. As international visitors learn about Javanese and other Indonesian cultures, you also gain insights into theirs. So come as you are, but be prepared to share your culture.
Peace PlaceIn Pati, Central Java, Indonesia, there is a community learning center situated on a permaculture site that includes a housing and training center, a Joglo preschool, and a Friends Guest House. We aimed to reduce the violence left behind by centuries of colonization in order to enhance vitality, health, and well-being—and to recognize that making peace with one another and with nature go hand in hand. The center’s activities are rooted in the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), under the care of Friends Peace Teams—Asia West Pacific.
Peace Place is offering an internship.Focused on:
- Joglo Preschoolattend school five mornings a week to assist with activities for 30-35 children aged three to six, working alongside four teachers, documenting activities, and developing materials for the...Regenerative Cultures of Justice and Peace Preschool Curriculum.
- Universal Design for Learning: Play with preschool children who have special needs, such as autism, deafness, or hyperactivity, and help create adaptive equipment or experiences for them.
- In addition, the Indonesian interns will accompany and translate the interns from Haverford University during the activity.
The intern will also attend the Alternatives to Violence Project — Cultures of Justice and Peace Workshop.
ScheduleWeek 1: Haverford and the English-speaking Indonesian intern meet with their mentor to discuss their focus.
- Week 2-3:Interfaith AVP Workshop on Creating Cultures of Justice and Peace, an interactive, community- and skill-building training on power, resilience, liberation, and consensus of conscience.
- Weeks 3-4: Haverford and the English-speaking Indonesian intern meet with their mentor to discuss their focus.
Most of the time will be on site, with some visits to local villages.

OutcomesWe encourage interns to keep a journal and portfolio to collect periodic reflections, photos of the setting, activities, and themselves interacting. We expect interns to write news articles and a presentation on how they plan to continue justice and peace work upon return. Every intern is expected to share the story of your experience in news stories through speaking events at home.
QualificationsInterns must be fluent in English.h (spoken and written).We expect an active engagement in justice and peace in your private and public life, and a maturity for respectful relationships with local people and foreigners. You must be an independent worker, but also collaborate well with others.
MentorsPetrus is the Director of the Peace Place Training Center and Nanik is the Principal of Joglo Preschool.
SupportSelected interns will receive a welcome packet with a Letter of Agreement for clarity. We will arrange an FPT Welcome Meeting, regular mentor sessions, daily work plans, and 2-3 monthly FPT Asia West Pacific Team meetings. You will be asked to complete an Internship Evaluation form at the end and attend a Farewell Meeting where you will receive a Certificate of Internship.The intern will receive pocket money, free simple daily meals, transportation for activities, and lodging.
ConcernsDifficulties should be raised immediately, specifically, and directly with your mentor, first in conversation, then in writing if needed. The mentor is asked to do the same for you.
