I had my first meeting with five new friends from the Surakarta Yaphi Organization (which means ‘Be active in overcoming the problems of injustice and violence in Human Rights, Law, Democracy, Gender, Child Protection and the Environment’). For 3 days we practiced AVP from 9 am to 5 pm. We explored the tools such as stopping, being a good speaker, good listener, being a good companion, and more. We reflected that these AVP tools form a strong basis for community support. Ian, a participant, reflected, “I am very grateful to be able to learn these tools for myself as a basis for my mentoring when I work with many people”. We agreed to bring these tools to be introduced to our friends in the office. A participant named Tina is active in organizations at her church and wants to invite her friends to practice AVP tools.
In the evening session, 7-9 pm, we practiced Power of Goodness (PoG) activities. We reflected on the stories, “Allah is Merciful: Perhaps Allah Needs Me,” and “A New Girl at School.” We were impressed by both stories. Ian reflected, “I can be in this position because of God’s guidance and my past struggles when I was often bullied at school and finally managed to prove that I can rise from my slump.” Power of Goodness activities remind us to appreciate our struggles and changes.
I feel very happy when I can meet new friends to learn and develop AVP and PoG activities together. We reflect and agree that these tools are very important for everyone to know. When we work with others, these tools serve as the basis for our personal strengthening.
