Tito and the first graders did a drawing activity of their favorite things.

In October, the Joglo Library was fortunate to receive a grant from the National Library, enabling the inclusion of the Power of Goodness program in Joglo School’s activities. The primary objective of these activities is to foster a love for reading and enhance literacy among children and the surrounding community.

The Power of Goodness program had been on hiatus due to other commitments, making this return to Tondomulyo a significant moment. It marks the beginning of my efforts to continue the work previously undertaken by Wiwit.

During our visit, we focused on reviewing and reinforcing the principles of living without violence. This included lessons on quitting harmful behaviors, becoming good listeners, and recalling the agreements made to practice these principles. It is a challenging task for children to remember the content of the AVP Justice and Peace activities, but it is essential for their continued development in the AVP skills building toward Justice and Peace.

Additionally, during this Power of Goodness session, the library team and I introduced a mission to promote environmental stewardship. We aimed to instill a new habit of avoiding single-use plastic bottles. To support this initiative, we distributed approximately 80 tumblers to the children at the school. Prior to distributing the tumblers, we engaged the children in a brainstorming session about single-use plastics. We discussed the environmental impact of single-use plastic waste and questioned the healthiness of packaged drinks and food. These discussions were designed to encourage the children to think critically and form opinions about the waste issues affecting their community. This is particularly relevant as Tondomulyo village experiences annual flooding. This happened because Tondomulyo is located along the Silugonggo river, which when the Wilalung Kudus dam was opened the river could not accommodate the water discharge and caused flooding.

We also encouraged the children to draw activities they enjoy doing with their friends. The children were visibly excited to express their ideas through drawings. Incorporating literacy through drawing proved to be an engaging and effective method for working with the children at the school.
